The sound reproduction achieved by Bang & Olufsen's CD 4500 CD player was truly outstanding.
It played both 12cm and 8cm compact discs and had an ingenious 'step' function which allowed you to go straight to a chosen track selected from anywhere on the disc. The CD player was one of the most technologically-advanced pieces of hi-fi on the market at the time and yet was one of the easiest to operate. The explicit display always indicated what the CD player was doing all the time - for example, which track was being played, and how many tracks there were on the played compact disc.
This new model was a welcome addition to the range, because for the first time in the series of audio separates that started with the Beomaster 1900, a compact disc player was made available that not only matched the shape and size of the Beomaster (and Beocord), but could also be hung on the wall alongside it. The previous CD players for these systems, the Beogram CD X and CD 3300, had been quite bulky and were suitable for horizontal running only.
Electronically, the Beogram CD 4500 carried much over from the previous CD 3300. It used the same Philips 16 bit chipset and basic analogue filters. As had been seen before, though a new mechanism that was smaller and lighter than the CDM-4 in the previous model was chosen. The drastic reduction in size that was achieved was as a result of dispensing with the die-cast inner frame (from the very early Philips CD100) that had been used in the CD X and CD 3300, and by using a specially designed layout for the printed panel, in preference to the Philips OEM one used in the CD 3300 and Beocenter 9000/9500. In addition, springs were added to support the mechanism when the unit was suspended vertically, which were engaged through slots in the back if required.
Beogram CD 4500 could be used as part of the Beosystem 4500 hi-fi system.
