Vintage Scuba - Set of 3 SPORTSWAYS  WATERLUNG Regulators - 1962!!

For all Sportsways fans, here's a nice set of 3 early models that would look great in your Vintage Scuba display.

It includes:  - a Black Label Hydronaut III with the late model balanced 1st stage. This regulator (marked as IMPROVED) is in
near perfect original condition. The chrome is spotless & all rubber parts are flexible. It has original metal clamps on
the exhaust TEE & the mouthpiece. The label is clean & clear. This was their best regulator in 1962.
                    - a Green Label MALIBU DIVER early model with a tilt valve 2nd, old style tubular exhaust TEE & the unique
Sportsways metal hose label that has the big Sportsways 'S' & reads "Sportsways Inc Tested by Sportsways 1962".
This reg is in good shape with just a few signs of use. The chrome is good with just a couple  almost invisible dents on
the back. The rubber parts are fine too. The mouthpiece has been replaced but still has the unique metal clamp.
This model was also labelled as their RENTAL model with an Orange Label. See my other listing for one of those.
                     - a Blue Label SPORT DIVER, their most popular model, also a tilt valve & in near perfect condition. The blue label is
spotless, the chrome is nice, the rubber parts are good. It also has the metal clamps on exhaust & mouthpiece and
the metal tag on the hose.
This is a particularly pretty reg & is special because it is the model used by Mike Nelson in the TV show Sea Hunt!!

Here's a bit of information about the above descriptions.
A tilt valve is the now defunct design 2nd stage that literally uses a long pin which, when pressed by the diaphragm on inhalation, tilts a very little bit to allow air to escape past the 2nd stage seat and into the diver's mouth. It is cheap to make & easy to repair BUT, can cut off the supply of air in case of a fault in the 1st stage. To recognize a tilt valve regulator without dismantling it, simply look for a pressure relief on the 1st stage. It is an odd-looking item on the body of the 1st that is clearly not a port. That relief ensures the hose will not burst if the tilt valve in the 2nd stage jams shut. Divers using a tilt valve can rest assured that if the air supply is cut off, they may well die, but their regulator hose will be OK!!! The tilt valve is no longer in use but it is an interesting part of early scuba diving history
The "Tested by Sportsways" on the metal hose tag means that, when installed on the regulator at the factory, it did not leak. Sportsways did NOT make the hoses. They just put the tag on!
To recognize an early, original Sportsways regulator, look for 3 things: tubular exhaust TEE, metal clamps on the TEE & mouthpiece, metal tag on the hose, 'Sportsways' on the yoke screw, & the hose secured by a C Clip to the 2nd stage. Note that there was no clamp on the very early tubular exhaust.

This is a nice set of regs from the early 1960s. Sportsways was a big player in those days. It was founded by Sam Lecocq, a personal friend, now passed away but well-remembered. Some of his innovations changed scuba. If you use an SPG (submersible pressure gauge), thank Sam.
Sam also has the distinction to be the only person unsuccessfully sued by JY Cousteau. Sam's 'WATERLUNG' name was close to AquaLung & JVC sued to have his stop using it - JVC lost!!

3 Sportsways regs with lots of history that ought to be in your collection for just $74.50!   That's less than $25 each!!
