Both have felt linings which are completely intact. One of the 5 inch hoops has loosened up over the years and the original owner has wrapped and sewn a bit of muslin around the interior hoop for a tighter fit, which was a popular practice of the period (see photos).

Even though these hoops are antiques they are still sturdy enough for everyday use. Because these hoops have no tension screw, you enjoy a smooth and seamless stitching experience because there is nothing for your embroidery thread to get caught on as you stitch.
