THE INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS AUSTRIAN ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON WAS GIVEN THE NICKNAME OF “THE BLOODLESS SURGEON OF VIENNA” BECAUSE HE TREATED PATIENTS WITHOUT CUTTING INTO SKIN OR TISSUE. DURING HIS 1903 VISIT WHICH WAS THE CATALYST FOR THE CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE BAYLOR

UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER, HE SIGNS HIS PERSONAL CALLING CARD.

ADOLF LORENZ (1854-1946) SIGNED PERSONAL CALLING CARD, “Prof. Dr. Adolf Lorenz, Vienna”, on his personal calling card 4 x 2.5, by the Austrian orthopedic surgeon who was one of the founders of the German Society of Orthopaedic Surgery (1901), is remembered for his work with bone deformities: He was renowned for his treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip in children, created a manipulative treatment for club feet, and through the use of traction and pulleys he developed a method of treating scoliosis (curvature of the spine). In 1903 he was at the peak of his career. The previous year Lorenz had been offered a huge fee to come to America to treat the daughter of a wealthy Chicago meatpacking magnate. The 12 year old daughter had a congenital dislocation of the hip and Lorenz was convinced to travel to Chicago to treat the girl. His visit was associated with tremendous publicity, and he was promoted as one of the most distinguishing surgeons of the world and was subsequently invited to meet with President Theodore Roosevelt and other dignitaries. A year later, he returned to America, primarily to follow up on his young patient in Chicago. At the same time he received an invitation from the American Medical Association to attend its annual meeting in New Orleans and to demonstrate his techniques. Two doctors from the small, at that time, city of Dallas, TX, were in attendance and appealed for Dr. Lorenz to visit their city. The subsequent visit on May 20, 1903 brought a huge number of sick and lame patients who came from all over Texas to be seen and treated by Dr. Lorenz. He conducted two daily clinics over the next week at the old 25 bed Good Samaritan Hospital. At a farewell and thank you dinner for Dr. Lorenz a Dallas pastor made an appeal to “build a great humanitarian hospital.” A local cattle baron stepped up with a large initial contribution and a promise to match other contributions. The new Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium opened five years later and in 1921 was renamed Baylor Hospital. In 1923 Dr. Lorenz was nominated for the Nobel Prize but lost by one vote. Dr. Adolf Lorenz’s 1903 visit was the catalyst for the creation and development of Baylor University Medical Center that exists today. The personal calling card is in fine condition, with minor adhesive residue.   #13091ZIM
