313th Bombardment Wing(VH) - 21st Bomber Command
20th Air Force
United States Army Air Force

This impressive World War II history of the war-winning 504th covers the important role played by this hard-fighting B-29 combat group flying missions from Tinian Island in the Marianas to defeat the Japanese Empire. The book documents the wartime story of the 504th Group, a key unit of General LeMay's Twentieth Air Force which contained five B-29 bombardment wings. The 504th deployed overseas in January 1945 and flew combat missions during half its wartime life with two squadrons instead of the usual three. The 504th struck at the heart of the Japanese Empire with impressive results. Detailed data is provided on targets struck with results, bombs/mines carried, aircraft utilization, casualty losses, photos of missions and Tinian life, and naval support including air/sea rescue. The 504th ended World War II when Captain George Jennings dropped the last weapon, a mine, during the early morning hours of August 1, 1945.
