Summary

It is the 1840s in the crude township of Melbourne in the Port Phillip district of the Colony of New South Wales. English, Irish and Scottish free settlers, soldiers and pardoned convicts arrive daily to begin life anew in the untamed bush spreading east along the Yarra River.

The Last Cry is a stunning tale of intrigue and war, of friendship and hope - when Europeans forging a new life in a strange, harsh land discovered others with stronger bonds to the land than they can imagine.

Ngayuk is a proud Aboriginal Wurundjeri, totally at home in his Birr-arung world of valleys and hilltops, planning to marry and raise his children in the ways of his Dreaming. But then comes death, destruction of his hunting grounds - and Jaga Jaga.

Jaga Jaga changes Ngayuk's life in so many ways. He learns quickly and horribly what these white-skinned newcomers are capable of, yet throughout his life Ngayuk consults and maintains his trust in his creative beings and a firm belief in the rightness of his own path.
