A World War Two casualty medal group to an Able Seaman who served with the Royal Navy and who was killed in action when HMS Broadwater was sunk on 18th October 1941.

The medal were awarded to D/JX 200459 Able Seaman John Joseph Hayes.

HMS Broadwater - H81 - was a Town Class destroyer that was built by the American firm Newport News and Dry Dock Co in March 1919.  She was transferred to the Royal Navy on 9th October 1940.

She served in the Atlantic as a convoy escort protecting merchant shipping.

HMS Broadwater was sunk by torpedoes from U-Boat U101 on 18th October 1941 during passage to the Mid Atlantic Meeting Point.

45 sailors lost their lives in the sinking.

John is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
