1957 Vintage Wire Press Photo by ASSOCIATED PRESS.
The Russian army newspaper Red Star identifies this as a picture of Laika, the dog the Russians say is riding around in outer space as a passenger aboard Sputnik II. Russia says Laika also is name given the breed of dog native to the Far North, related to the larger Husky and to the Spitz or Pomeranian. Laikas are noted for their endurance.

Laika was a Soviet space dog who was one of the first animals in space and the first to orbit the Earth. A stray mongrel from the streets of Moscow, she flew aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft, launched into low orbit on 3 November 1957.
