The coins were released in January of the following year—just a few short months after JFK’s passing. The design proved to be so popular that it replaced the existing Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar, and Kennedy has remained the face of the denomination ever since.

FIRST-YEAR KENNEDY HALF-DOLLAR – Featuring U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts’ bust of President John F. Kennedy, the 1964 Kennedy Half-Dollar was originally meant to be a one-year-only tribute to the fallen President. It proved to be so popular, however, that the U.S. Mint has issued it every year since. The coin’s reverse is a modified design of the Presidential Seal by Frank Gasparro, who replaced Roberts as the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver in 1965.
STRUCK IN GLEAMING SILVER – These first-year Kennedy Half Dollars were struck in 90% silver—the only year these coins were struck in 90% silver for general circulation.
