This meticulously researched book covers the surprisingly rich history of ski mountaineering and also doubles as a detailed guide to 54 sought-after mountain descents-from New Hampshire's Mount Washington to Alaska's Mount McKinley. The route selection is a hit-list intended for all levels of telemarkers, snowboarders, or alpine skiers. Although Wild Snow is a fascinating historical text, it also serves as a guidebook for those would attempt the routes it chronicles. Either way, you will emerge with a new perspective on mountains and why we go to them.

Figure out where you want to spend your winter

I Used this book to link together a winter backcountry ski road trip. All major mountains and major classics are included. From the extremes to the one day blitz trips and everything in between. Each chapter starts with a region and the regions ski history. It then goes into individual mountains with a brief history of each and all the essential guide information for each. Each chapter ends with a map placing the peaks in perspective to one another with major roads. Probably my favorite part. There is also a directory in the back to point you to local ski shops and ranger stations for each region.
