In the early 1900s Earl Stetson Crawford studied in Paris under James McNeill Whistler at Whistler's  Academie Carmen, and Whistler thought enough of his abilities to appoint him "monitor" of his art class.  In 1923 Crawford moved to the south of France, where he lived until the outbreak of World War II which forced him to return to the United States.  Throughout the 1920s he produced numerous European landscape studies.  He devoted himself almost exclusively to etchings, which he considered the highest form of printmaking, usually in editions of 50 or less.  He almost always made a finished drawing prior to putting the needle to copper plate.
