Cabinet of curiosities Wunderkammer Vanitas Memento Mori

Carved ebonised wood skull with laurels and with beautiful cut faceted smoky quartz stone and sterling silver (tested for silver) set into the eye sockets of the skull, with a solid bronze column and lion paw stand.

Beautiful stunning piece of Memento Mori Baroque Revival.

Symbol of mortality

Probably used as a Altar display piece.

Approx dimensions: 21cm tall x 10cm wide at widest point.

Condition: used with some marks scuffs, scratches and with heavy aged related patina and verdigris.

This piece was purchased from an estate sale, it was originally found in a religious chateau cellar in France around 20 years ago. I then purchased this piece around 10 years ago from the previous collector.

The piece is from the 19th century.

It’s a beautifully made and of solid construction and quite a heavy piece.

The skull was carved from a heavy hardwood then ebonised with bronze laurels which are fixed to the skull then made with a beautiful solid bronze column and lion paw stand.

This stunning piece will grace wherever it is displayed.
