An antique Fijian warrior's i Ula Tavatava wooden fighting club

The Ula or I Ula Tavatava is a throwing war club from Fiji

i Ula Tavatava. Throwing club. 

This i Ula was carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. 

It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. 

This i Ula Tavatava consists of a bulbous, lobed head and long adjoining handle. 

The head incorporates fissures naturally formed from the rootstock.

Usually cut from a hardwood type of iron wood, it has a round end made up of the root knot and is sometimes called "pineapple club" for his particular shape.

 It can be launched or used as a club.

LENGTH = approx 14"

AGE = No later than mid 19th Century

PROVENANCE Ex collection of the late Mr. Rick Mackay, Waiuku Auckland (RIP) 

Gifted to a Kohimarama resident and worker at the Melanesian Mission House, Auckland New Zealand Circa 1855-1860 

Given by English Anglican Missionary Priest (Later Bishop) John Coleridge Patteson 

Patteson was later martyred on Nukapu, one of the Easternmost islands of the Solomon Islands, on 20 Sept 1871
