1886 Augusta County, VA tax receipt signed by Confederate veteran James N. McFarland.

McFarland (1842-1927) enlisted in 1861 as a private with Company E, 5th VA Infantry, and in 1863 achieved the rank of lieutenant, fighting in the battles of Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was captured at the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse in 1864, sent to Fort Delaware Prison, and returned to the Confederate army in 1865 via a prisoner swap. After coming home to Augusta County, he worked as a deputy sheriff and was later elected county treasurer. This document dates from that period.
