PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON!  THE EARLY HITS THAT MADE THEM FAMOUS!

Peter Paul and Mary Song Book, New York, Pepamar Music Corp., 1965

Ah, the days of sweet melodies and tight vocal harmonies!  There were a number of artists—Burl Ives, The Kingston Trio—who helped the Folk Revival make the leap from pinko beatnik coffee houses to the Pop Charts in the early 1960s, but none was bigger than Peter Paul and Mary…Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers.

The irony of these “pop folk” groups was that serious Folkies despised them for their very popularity, which signified a degree of inauthenticity.  The irony lay in the fact that their popularity is what made the market for authentic folk artists a possibility!

I was a ‘folk singer” back in those days and recall that argument all too well.  In retrospect it all seems pretty silly.  PPM were just really, really good!  I saw them a number of times probably in 1963 or probably 1964.

This anthology is undated, but the latest copyright date included is 1965 and other sellers have this book up with that date.

Condition:

Book is in Very Good to Excellent condition.  There is some edgewear on the back (see pics), but this is from many years of storage.  This was never used.  I bought it new probably in ’65 or ’66.  By that time I knew all the PPM songs I cared for from nabbing them off records, and anyway, by the time this book was published, I had moved on from pop-folk to more obscure or esoteric repertoire.

I am not an antiques or commercial dealer, just a person with many interests who collects and never liked to get rid of things.  Everything I’m selling is “stuff” I’ve accumulated, not something “picked” for resale.  It’s just time to start letting go…and make my wife happy.   Consider this my contribution to “recycling!”  Please see my other items.  Happy bidding!  Thank you!
