A very rare and remarkable set of books: THE AMERICAN REVIEW: A Whig Journal, Volumes III, IV and V. Published by Wiley and Putnam of New York in 1846 and 1847. All are bound in brown half leather. The Review covered both the politics and the literature of the time.  It's a revealing look into the years leading up to the American Civil War. There are several plates of Whig leaders and contributors, including Daniel Webster. Generally one or two per volume. These three volumes have several articles on the Mexican American War and the Whig position on the issue. They were anti-expansionist. There are also several interesting pieces of literature, including a poem by Edgar Allan Poe under the pseudonym of Quarles and a chapter from Herman Melville's Typee. More stories and poems typical of the time and numerous reviews of other authors and their works. The covers are soiled and worn, but not too badly. The spines are intact. The front and rear boards are holding.  The bindings are surprisingly good: sound, not loose. There is mild foxing throughout each volume, but no water damage. Please view all posted photos. One small pastedown under the front cover from a previous owner. All three volumes are out of the same private library: O. Ames Jr. They're good copies. Excellent primary sources for any student of American History. Do compare these volumes to the few other sets, full or partial, currently available. Size is approximately 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches. There are approximately 650 numbered pages in each, not including the indices. Feel free ask any questions you may have; I'd be happy to answer. Shipping is $17.50 via USPS Ground Advantage. Should the actual shipping be less to your location, I will refund the difference the day the books ship. A signature request will be attached to the package to help prevent mis-delivery and package theft.  Finally, if you have a moment, you might want to take a look at my other interesting to rare items up for sale this week.
