A rare stereocard (for viewing as a 3-D image with a special viewer) referencing the Gilbert & Sullivan show “HMS Pinafore”, issued by a Woonsocket shop in c.1879. On the face is mounted a photograph of a cartoon of an angry school teacher showing a naughty schoolboy a pin on which he has sat down, with the caption “Did you ever see that pin-a-fore. No never! What never!! Well hardly ever.”   The 5.5” x 3” image is mounted on a 7” by 3.5” yellow card which has “Comic Gems” and “The “Best” Series” on the margins. The reverse has an overprinted advert for George Taylor and Co., fancy goods retailer of 36 Main St, Woonsocket, RI.  In good condition with just a few minor signs of wear including a previous owner's inscription on the reverse.

*This item was formerly in the collection of John Cannon, the respected G&S collector and researcher who died in 2021. He left instructions that all collectors should have a chance to acquire the treasures in his collection, which will therefore be auctioned here over the next year or so by StageMemories and PaperJoys. Please let us know if you would like to be added to a mailing list, to be informed of all or specific items from John’s collection.

Shipping:  Please take a look at the shipping options offered, which are based on my estimate of the selling price.  If an item sells for less than expected I may be able to reduce the shipping cost. Equally, if an item sells for considerably more than expected then you might wish to boost the insurance or the depth of packaging, which will increase the shipping cost.  I am always happy to combine items to reduce the shipping costs for you, but please note that when multiple items reach a high total value I may ask you to insure the package. If you want a service not stated, such as first class or surface mail, please ask for a quote. In all cases please discuss with me before making your payment. The maximum possible level of insurance on items sent overseas with Royal Mail is £250.  If the total value of contents exceeds this figure then you will have to accept the risk of sending the item(s), or choose an alternative courier.
