This Index contains a list of all the Land Grants issued in the territory comprising West Virginia by the Commonwealth of
Virginia, as well as a list of Grants issued by Lord Fairfax before the Virginia Land Office was established; also a list of the
Grants issued by the State of West Virginia.

It is arranged alphabetically by grantee last name, then by county.
Includes date of grant, acres granted, location of grant, page reference in state records.
Covers period from 1772 (first WV county formation of Berkeley) to 1858.

The pages given refer to the Records as they are found in the State Auditor's Office in Charleston, WV.

The Grants issued by the State of West Virginia are in the office of the Secretary of State.

A List of Counties, with date of formation, from what Counties formed, boundary lines, etc., will be found in the back of this book.

Includes present-day West Virginia counties of Barber, Barbour, Berkeley, Boone, Braxton, Brooke, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge,

Fayette, Gilmer, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hancock, Hardy, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lewis, Logan, Marion, Marshall,

Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Ohio, Pendleton, Pleasants, Pocahontas, Preston, Putnam,

Randolph, Ritchie, Roane, Russell, Taylor, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Wayne, Wetzel, Wirt, Wood, and Wyoming.

Does not include counties of Grant (1866), Mineral (1866), Mingo (1895), Raleigh (1850), Summers (1871), or Webster (1860).

Does include three current-day Virginia counties that once extended into current-day West Virginia -

Bath (formed 1790 from Augusta, Botetourt, and Greenbrier), Montgomery (formed 1776 from Fincastle (extinguished), Botetourt, and Pulaski),

and Wythe (formed 1789 from Montgomery and Grayson Counties).

All text is readable, although some pages are faint and have pencil markings.

This is a must-have reference for tracing early western or West Virginia ancestors.
