“The Directory now presented being, so far as is known, the first

of its kind ever issued, it is the editor's duty to show cause.

 The rapid multiplification of occupations open to women, and 

the general advance which they are making in the world of work, call

urgently for records, definitions and other details, so that the general

public, the business world, and women as a group may understand con-

ditions more clearly and be ready for needed adjustments.

It has long been a custom in state and national government to

record the number of women in industry, their types of occupations

and the conditions affecting them in their work; but when America en-

tered the World War in 1917 and was searching out all possible 

resources for bringing on victory, it was found that neither national nor 

state records afforded any lists or other organized information as to the 

business and professional women of the country. There was therefore no

way to marshal such forces quickly and use them to the best advantage.

One of the purposes of this Directory is to pave the way for 

remedying this condition in Virginia as well as in Richmond.”
