Home to over 1.2 million people in 1910, West Virginia was created in the ashes of the American Civil War. This publication
of three volumes covers the history of the state, and was originally published in 1913.

Beginning with the earliest explorers to the region, it provides a detailed account of the state's development. Additionally,
it contains biographical sketches of important residents. Of particular use to the researcher are these brief histories and
genealogies. Portraits, names of ancestors and descendants are included in many entries, making this an invaluable tool
for the researcher whose ancestors lived in West Virginia.

West Virginia's history was profoundly affected by its mountainous terrain, spectacular river valleys, and rich natural resources.
These were all factors driving its economy and the lifestyles of residents, as well as drawing visitors to the "Mountain State"
 in the early 21st century.
