Cumberland County was created on March 2, 1843 from the southern part of Coles County.  The court house in Toledo burned to the ground in 1885,

thus official records for the period 1843 to 1885 are non-existent.

Jasper County was formed in 1831 out of Clay and Crawford Counties. It was named for Sgt. William Jasper, Revolutionary War hero from South Carolina.

In the defense of Fort Moultrie in 1776, when the staff of the American flag was shot away, Sgt. Jasper erected a temporary staff, and waved the flag at

the British until a new staff was erected.

Richland county was formed in 1841 from Clay and Lawrence counties.

Marion County was organized in 1823 from portions of Jefferson and Fayette Counties. It was named in honor of

Revolutionary War Gen. Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox".

Clay County was formed in 1824 out of portions of Wayne, Crawford, and Fayette counties. Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, famous

American statesman, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century.

Clay was an unsuccessful candidate for President in the year the County was named.

Effingham County was formed in 1855 out of Fayette and Crawford Counties. It may have been named after Thomas Howard, 3rd Earl of Effingham,

who resigned his commission as general in the British army in 1775, refusing to serve in the war against the Colonies. The name is Anglo-Saxon for

"Effa's house". New information suggests that the county was named after a surveyor who surveyed the area whose last name was Effingham.

There is no written proof that the county was named after Lord Effingham.
