Albrecht Durer(1471-1528) was the leading artist of the Northern Renaissance and the greatest printmaker in the history of western art. A prolific draftsman, he elevated the aesthetic quality of printmaking and put it on equal terms with the drawings and paintings of the Italian Renaissance.  Artists across Europe admired and copied Dürer's innovative and powerful prints. His copperplate engravings of Knight, Death, and the Devil, Adam and Eve, Melencolia I and the woodcuts of The Large Passion of Christ are still universally acclaimed today.

Technically, Dürer's prints are exemplary for their detail and precision. The son of a goldsmith, Dürer was trained as a metalworker at a young age. He applied the same meticulous, exacting methods required in this delicate work to his woodcuts and engravings.

He traveled to Italy in 1494, and returned again in 1505-6. Contact with Italian painters resonated deeply in his art. Dürer was also a great admirer of Leonardo da Vinci. He was intrigued by the Italian master's studies of the human figure, and after 1506 applied and adapted Leonardo's proportions to his own figures, as is evident in his drawings.

The Large Passion, of which The Resurrection is the final subject, was a series of twelve large woodcuts Dürer published in 1511. The Crucifixion and Passion of Christ is a centuries-old subject that tells the story of the final events in Christ's life. Durer’s interest in the Passion of Christ was a personal quest for the source of his creativity, and it was also a personal response to the cultural and theological transformation of his society.

In the early 16th century, most European art was linked to religion, and the Passion was a primary subject. Dürer’s Passion woodcuts reveal how the individual soul and the larger world nourish each other. In The Resurrection , Durer depicts Christ rising from the dead on the third day after his Crucifixion, floating above the tomb while the guards sleep.

**the giclee process produces a superior quality, fine art reproduction from a high-resolution digital file of an image. The file is then printed with a high-resolution photo generation printer on a fine art paper. Most artists and working photographers today use the giclee process to produce reproductions of their original artwork and photographs.

As with any original art or fine art reproduction, it is recommended that prints are framed and displayed under glass to prevent color fade or shift over the years.
