From the Foreword:

In a time when American business is greatly increasing its activity overseas, it is handicapped by the fact that the literature on international operations is disappointingly thin. The young executive heading for his first foreign assignment, the more experienced manager who is moving up the ladder, and the senior company officer who is responsible for the instruction of his associates in the international department have long needed a book which would provide some guidelines for the American running an installation in another country. This volume is designed specifically to fill that gap. It is not a discussion of the various ways in which a firm can launch itself in an overseas venture; it does not deal with the organization and management of an international division; it is not essentially for the company manager who is staying at home and attempting to evaluate the effectiveness of his firm's international activities. Rather, it is written for the practicing manager abroad; it tells him, often with examples, just what he is likely to run into in marketing, production, finance and other business functions. It briefs him on the problems of building a management team and maintaining good relations with his headquarters- two areas of particular concern to the executive abroad.
