Expressionism was an artistic style that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in Germany and Austria, where artists sought to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events aroused in them. The Expressionists revolted against Impressionism, with its faithfulness to rendering nature as it appeared. Their goal was to depict the world as it felt viscerally rather than how it looked on the surface and, by doing so, to reinvigorate art with authenticity and expressive force.

Expressionist artists used distortion, exaggeration, primitivism, fantasy and vivid, jarring violent applications of the formal elements of their compositions. Extreme angles, flattened forms, garish colors, and distorted views are distinctive features of Expressionism, which flourished between 1905 and 1920.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 – 1938) was a German expressionist painter and printmaker and one of the founders of the artists group Die Brücke or "The Bridge", a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. In 1933, his work was branded as "degenerate" by the Nazis and in 1937 over 600 of his works were sold or destroyed. In 1938 he committed suicide by gunshot.

Members of Die Brücke greatly admired the work of Edvard Munch, and aimed to make a "bridge" between traditional neo-romantic German painting and modern expressionist painting. The four founding members made much use of the print as a cheap and quick medium with which to produce affordable art.

Primitive art and African sculpture art was also an inspiration to the members of the Die Brücke. Their acceptance of primitive art, which was to fortify decisively the expressive yearnings of European artists, was unequivocal. It is through this style that they found a source of strength in the barbaric figures.

**the giclee process produces a superior quality, fine art reproduction from a high-resolution digital file of an image. The file is then printed with a high-resolution photo generation printer on a fine art paper. Most artists and working photographers today use the giclee process to produce reproductions of their original artwork and photographs.

As with any original art or fine art reproduction, it is recommended that prints are framed and displayed under glass to prevent color fade or shift over the years.
