Original "Dakota Digital" One-Time-Use / Disposable Digital Camera
Sold for very short time by RITZ and Wolf camera and by CVS and Walgreen at the dawn of digital revolution.
FIRST TRULY DIGITAL DISPOSABLE CAMERA EXPERIMENT !!!
Part of the history of digital photography!!!

This cameras will be interesting to camera collectors and camera historians. Dakota Digital Camera was first ever disposable DIGITAL camera sold in the stores. The story go:
At the beginning of digital revolution in cameras few drug-store chains namely CVS, and Walgreen, and few camera stores like
RITZ, and Wolf camera made attempt to sell disposable one time use digital cameras, as alternatives to new by very expensive at that time digital cameras, and old single-use disposable film cameras introduced 100 years earlier by Kodak.
The idea was that after customer made 25 shots he/she will return
Dakota Digital camera back to store, and store will download pictures from the camera and put them on the Web where you can order prints, or CD, or send link to pictures to your friends and relatives and they can order prints if they like to.
Unfortunately this attempt fail by all the right reasons..., camera was expensive to make, but it was sold (or better say "rented") for only $10.99US(2003) with intention to charge customers for printing pictures, and then reuse cameras many times. But just after few months on the market, camera was hacked by few smart kids and hack was posted on the Net, so camera now can be reused over and over again, and never returned back to the store. Using special software, Firmware inside of the camera can be "updated", then modified cradle from Palm Pilot(remember Palm Pilot ? :) can be used to download pictures from camera to PC computer,
then pictures on the camera can be deleted and camera ready to be reused over and over again without ever taking it back to the store. So for $11 anyone can get digital camera! Very basic, single focus, but nevertheless digital camera, in 2003!!!.
It was all over the news. CVS, Walgreen had to take cameras off the shelfs and cut they losses.
One who bought this cameras was happy and grateful to hukkers who crack the camera.
I wonder what happens with this guys now. Really smart guys!!! It was a real adventure to follow this story.
But at that time digital camera prices start falling down like a rock, and megapixels double every 6 month. So very soon "Dakota" One-Time-Digital camera became obsolete. Walgreen trying to keep project alive later introduced improved Dakota camera with better security, and even offer one-time-use camcorder. After about a year project was finally scraped and all cameras was destroyed. Except of few cameras what was never returned back to store.
