About the Artwork

If Regency era England had heavy metal albums, John Martin's The Bard is what the cover art would have looked like. The painting was inspired by Thomas Gray's 1755 poem of the same name, in which King Edward I conquers Wales and orders all the bards killed, lest they inspire the people to rise up against their new English overlords. When the last bard is chased to a rocky precipice, he curses the army below and throws himself into the swirling river. Gray's verse reads: "Enough for me: with joy I see / The diff'rent doom our fates assign. / Be thine Despair and sceptred Care; / To triumph and to die are mine.' / He spoke, and headlong from the mountain's height / Deep in the roaring ride he plunged to endless night."
