Vintage 1942 Liberty Cavalcade Lapel Badge WW2 Fund Exhibition S Africa Pegasus

The Liberty Cavalcade was an exhibition organised by the City Council of Johannesburg (South Africa) and contained military exhibits, cultural exhibits from Allies’ countries and amusement entertainments. This exhibition ran from 23rd May to 1st June, covered an area of some 180 acres at Zoo Lake and was attended by over 50,000 visitors. As with all exhibitions of this nature and size, planning began well in advance and involved huge cooperation in effort and expense with the main intention of raising funds for the war effort.

This badge would have been available for sale to visitors and shows Liberty holding a torch and Pegasus, the winged horse. Other ‘Cavalcade’ exhibitions were held throughout South Africa throughout the rest of the war to raise funds and brooch-style as well as stick-pin variants of these were also issued, but it seems the buttonhole type is the more prevalent variant
