Beautiful pair of 24K gold earrings with red spinel stones

handmade and richly decorated, originally used as studs in enlarged earlobe holes which, according ancient representations of Buddha and Hindu deities, were considered a sign of respectability and wealth. We added a new pair of hooks, in 18K gold, to use them as dangling earrings, easily removable. Good condition and nice patina. Karnataka, South India, 1920 approx.
