THE CHURCH OF ST JEAN DE TROYES

HEDLEY FITTON

1859 - 1929

  • Sheet Size: 20 1/4" X 23 1/2"
  • Image size: 15 1/4" x 16 3/4"

This is a magnificent, original Hedley Fitton architectural etching depicting a Parisian street scene in front of the church of St Jean de Troyes.  The etching is on  heavy ivory wove paper and pencil signed by the artist in the lower right margin.  The old paper has mellowed a bit but the margins are clean and wide and the etching was never glued down.  There is a small area of foxing type stain in the upper right sky area (See Photos) but there are no other flaws.

The etching has been removed from its frame and the matting needs to be replaced but I will retain some of the matting to insure safe shipping in a box. The original label from the framed etching indicates it is an artist's proof and that label will be enclosed with the etching. There is publisher's information (Robert Dunthorne & Son, London) and a date (July 7, 1923) in the lower right plate. I'm told there is also an artist's signature and date in reverse in the lower left plate and with the help of a mirror and a magnifying glass, I was able to make out "Troyes 1923" but I cannot make out the rest.
