Traditionally worn in the Middle East, the Keffiyeh has become a fashion accessory to some and a political statement to others. Different regions in the Middle East have their own varieties and names for the scarf (Keffiyeh, Shemagh, Hatta, Mashada, Ghutra) as well as variations of embroideries and colors.
Traditionally the Palestinian Hatta is white and black although red can also be found. The Saudi Ghutra is white or red/white with a clean cut design. The Yemeni Mashada comes in all different colors and styles with a wide variety of patterns. The Jordanian and Iraqi Shemaghs are typically black/white or red/white with varying patterns. Syrians also have their unique patterns and variations. The Persian Chafiye typically comes with a plaid pattern as do Afghan, Pakistan and Indian variants.
