Robert A. Nelson (1927 - )

Robert A. Nelson is a wonderful American artist known for his fun, whimsical and crazy composition illustrations and pencil drawings. Nelson works reside in the permanent collections of the the Museum of Modern Art, the Seattle Art Museum, Boston's DeCordova Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution. This is a rather large pencil drawing on two pieces of paper measuring a total of 36 x 30 inches entitled "Waterbirds" as seen in the lower left corner. The main subject are 7 birds that have become frozen in the water while an appropriately numbered 7 people skate on the ice above. The level of detail seen in the skates above are lifelike and beautiful to look at. This piece is comprised of two pieces of paper, two separate compositions but they have been stitched together with a green piece of string that runs all the way across the image just below the skates as seen in the 6th image provided. The birds in the lower portion are in such a miserable state while the people above are having a fun time enjoying the cold weather and frozen water. The main subjects while though they are the birds the humans above are paradoxical to them which adds a nice dynamic and overtone to the original drawing. The condition is excellent and its void of any damage that I can find, the images represent the quality, condition and beauty of this piece but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing.
