Vintage Antique Late 19th C Singapore Chinese Straits 900 Silver Dragon Lion Foo Dog Dress or Scarf Clip 1" Long
This rare antique silver dress clip was made by Straits Chinese silversmiths in the late 19th, early 20th C. Please note the intricate silver beading and carved details. This small clip is an amazing work of art.
Straits Chinese were those who had emigrated from China to the Singapore, Malacca, Malaysia region as far back as the 15th century.
This dress or scarf clip depicts the protective dragon or Foo dog, a powerful guardian symbol in Chinese culture.
The clip is unmarked but tests as silver, perhaps 835-900 purity, commonly used in these pieces.
Clip measures
1" L x 5/8ths" W.
Weight is 4.14 grams.
**Great collector’s item, as it is rare. But highly wearable as a dress, scarf or shawl clip.**

Foo Dog Lion Dog Dragon Celestial Dog
Foo Dog, Lion Dog Dragon Celestial Dog all names given to the creatures that guarded the Buddhist temples of the Far East for more than 2,000 yrs. Also called Lion of Buddha, seen as the protector of Buddhist Dharma. The Foo Dog appears in tattoo designs today. The combination of both lion/dog features with claws out & teeth showing, stalking imaginary demons. Regal beasts became guardians at the gates of emperors. They stood guard at tombs & government buildings to frighten away evil spirits.
