Very rare and original, ca1910 Oil Painting on suede leather hide of the Native American Southern Cheyenne Indian Chief Wolf Robe by artist P. Bischoft. This outstanding original painting on leather came to us as part of a small collection of early 20th century Native American Indian paintings which we will be selling over the next few weeks.

This very beautiful Painting is executed on a fringed, suede hide that measures approx. 23" by 23" (including fringe). The Image itself is at the center of the hide and measures approx. 19” by 21”. It is titled by the artist within the image “Wolf Robe” and signed by the artist – P. Bischoft.

This is a bust portrait of Wolf Robe wearing a single eagle coup feather and what appears to be a Peace Medal as a neckerchief slide. This painting is taken from a very famous photograph of Broken Arm by Frank Rinehart in 1898.

Wolf Robe or Ho'néhevotoomáhe (born between 1838 and 1841; died 1910, Oklahoma) was a Southern Cheyenne chief and a holder of the Benjamin Harrison Peace Medal. During the late 1870s he was forced to leave the open plains and relocate his tribe on to the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian Reservation in Indian Territory. He was awarded the Benjamin Harrison Peace Medal in 1890 for his assistance in the Cherokee Commission. F. A. Rinehart photographed the chief in 1898, and DeLancy Gill photographed him in 1909. The iconic portrait photographs of Wolf Robe have been popular throughout the last century. Numerous painters and sculptors have, in turn, created artworks based upon these photographs. Although it is unlikely, some people believe he was the model for the Indian Head nickel.

The Painting is unconditionally guaranteed to be an original, oil Painting by Bischoft and will come with our own Letter of Authenticity with a statement of our lifetime guarantee that it will be deemed original and authentic by any third party authentication service.
