Of the finest
quality, this large, three section Dutch epergne is in almost perfect condition
and dates to 1871. The sterling silver
base section is cement filled at the bottom and rests on an attached wood
platform. It is masterfully engraved
with leaf and frond designs and bears Dutch hallmarks which we cannot identify,
but have pictured. The full inscription,
in Dutch is as follows:
Hunnen Vriend den Majoor H. P. Ibink Melenbrinle
Ten feestdage ryner
benoeming tat Officier
20 Maart 146
Het Corps Officieien
en de cluditeur
Der d.d. Schjuttery

We think this commemorates a soldier’s promotion to an officer’s rank. There are very minor dents to the bottom of the silver. The large cut crystal bowl that fits on the base has just a couple of very minor nicks on the outside edge that you have to look hard to detect. There is a flake to the edge of the center hole that was the result of deterioration of the connecting gasket, which we replaced with a new one. The tall cut crystal flower vase that is the top section has a threaded silver projection at the bottom that threads into the base and holds the epergne together, and the top section is in excellent condition. A beautiful and historically important piece. The total height is 21 ½”, maximum diameter is 16 ½” and the total weight is a little over 12 lbs.
