Angular Momentum "ILLUM / IV" model, Momentum 15 - SPORT WRIST WATCH

Angular Momentum of Switzerland - Company Background

Today, Angular Momentum is a small, independent one-man company founded in 1998 in Bern, the Capital of Switzerland and is one of the few brands that is focused on bespoke works. In the early stages of the company (between 2000-2004), Angular Momentum made the ILLUM series of watches.

Over the last 20 years of watchmaking Martin Pauli has created and manufactured more than 1,000 different watches for collectors and watch lovers around the world. All timepieces are completely made by hand and made using hand operated machines.

Angular Momentum has pioneered the application of old and new techniques to create unique, beautifully crafted timepieces. Engraving in a variety of materials from metals to bone to Japanese lacquer, Verre Èglomisé (reverse painting on the back side of the crystal), the Revolving-Disk-System for displaying time (patented; frees up space for art), and hand-made (Manu Propria) timepieces are all part of the Angular Momentum world. Each Angular Momentum piece is an individual work of art.

Angular Momentum does not work with distributors, retailers or agents, therefore Angular Momentum watches are not available at the retail level. The process of creating a bespoke time piece together with a customer is a very sophisticated process and cannot be delegated to a third party.

In 2004 - because of the difficult conditions in the watch industry, Angular Momentum was restructured with the vision of creating and manufacturing beautiful hand made time pieces. Made using time honored, old technologies and crafted with traditional skills, with the premise being that no single part is made by CNC machines, so as not to depend on outside suppliers. All working steps - from case making, to the artwork, are done by a skilled craftsman - Martin Pauli.

Custom made and "Bespoke" Timepiece:

Angular Momentum of Switzerland offers the unique service to individuals who wish to have their own personalized timepiece. The Artisan Timepiece Collection features a wide range of individual bespoke timepieces, tailor made for a demanding clientele around the world.  Today the majority of Angular Momentum’s yearly production is bespoke timepieces and very small and limited editions, in total no more than 350 pieces per year.

Movements:

Historically, the Swiss watch and clock industry has always had a specialized horizontal structure in which suppliers, craftsmen and sub-contractors supply movements and external parts to assemblers called "établisseurs", who put the final product together. However, to a lesser extent, the industry has also developed a vertically integrated structure in which watches and clocks are sometimes made entirely by the same company, in this case called a "manufacture".

Our Artisan Timepieces are all fit with historical (NOS) new-old-stock movements manufactured between 1950 to 1975 by FHF (Fabrique d'Horlogerie Fontainmelon) and AS (Adolf Schild SA) and Unitas SA which became the today's ETA SA later on.

The FHF and AS movements are - though 50 to 70 years old - of excellent quality. Some say even better than today's mass produced movements. All movements have never been used before and are completely overworked, decorated and if necessary modified in the Angular Momentum ateliers in Bern.

The movements we use in our watches have been supplied by FHF and AS between 1910 and 1980 in large quantities to well known brands among them:

Tissot Cal. 2132/35/36/37 = FHF 69N, Bulova Cal. 3AL = FHF 59, Cortebert Cal. 732 = FHF 73-4, Doxa, Dugena Cal. 3605 = FHF 96, Dugena Cal. 677 and 777 = FHF 70, Elgin = FHF 905, Gruen Cal. 220 = FHF 60, Longines Cal. 510 = FHF 59-21, Lucien Paccard, Sefes, Silvana, Tudor Cal. 390 = FHF 96, Waltham Cal. 1155 = FHF 70, Zodiac Cal. 58 = FHF 81 (1965) and FHF 96, FHF Auto 909, Eaton Solar Aqua movements = FHF, Girard Prregaux Cal. GP 86 = FHF (1930-60), Girrard Perregaux Cal. GP 21 Gyromatic = FHF 90-5, Girrard Perregaux Cal. GP 461 = FHF 90-5905, Alpina Cal. 647 = FHF 70, Alpina Cal. 668 = FHF 28, Alpina Cal. 821 = FHF 123, Rolex Cal. 59 (CS) = FHF 30-1 (around 1945), Rolex Cal. Marconi special and Rolex Viceroy (from 1919) = FHF.

Meaning of Angular Momentum?

ANGULAR MOMENTUM is a concept taken from astrophysics that derives from the combination of a moment of inertia with an angular velocity. The term dates back to the German astronomer and physicist JOHANNES KEPLER (*1571) and means the TORCH. The term Angular Momentum is also used in movement making and describes the force of a movement.

Revolving-Disk-System (R.D.S.)

Since time began, continuous attempts have been made to revolutionize the tried and tested two-hand time indication system with new Innovations. Specifically speaking, by implementing the Revolving-Disk-System (R.D.S.) of Angular Momentum, this has been successfully achieved. Abridged as R.D.S., this method is an alternative time reading system without hour hand and is printed with the number 1 to 12. Where the number 12 normally is, one reads the actual hour on the disk.

Watch Cases

All watch parts, cases, crowns, hands, artworks are executed in the ateliers by hand and hand operated machines. Angular Momentum only works with external specialists for complicated diamond setting and very difficult guilloche works.

Movement Restoration

Angular Momentum restores older movements. All new old stock movements used in our watches are e-bauch or pre-ebauche movements, completely cleaned, oiled, assembled and tested in our atelier.

Details regarding this listed item -

Angular Momentum "ILLUM / IV" model, Momentum 15 - SPORT WRIST WATCH

This is a watch made in Switzerland by a company called "Angular Momentum". It uses a very unique revolving Disc system on the dial that basically allows you to quickly view the 24-hour military time as well as see the 12-hour time using the "normal" hands.

This is not a cheap or gimmicky type watch! It is made from the finest materials and highest quality construction, with features as follows -
  • Case is made with all stainless steel “316L" surgical steel, with a screw-down back.
  • The case has a brushed or satin finish and looks great.
  • The front crystal is very lightly domed and is made from scratch-resistant Sapphire.
  • The black matte dial has bright orange Arabic hour numbers from 0-60 surrounding the edge.
  • These numbers are luminous (coated with Super-Luminova), as are the oversized hour hand and silver and orange minutes hand.
  • The dial also has a Super-Luminova luminous tipped sweep seconds hand.
  • The very outside edge has a seconds/minutes chapter.
  • There is a white date window located at the 4 o'clock position of the dial.
  • The date can be quick-set using the black signed enamel tipped crown.
  • Both the winding crown and the case back are of the screw-down variety.
  • The watch is rated at 100 metres or 333 feet waterproof.
  • As the hands are set - or turn on their own - so does the independent center Disc which is separate and raised from the rest of the dial.
  • The center Disc is signed "Illum / IV" while the bottom of the dial reads "Swiss Made, Angular Momentum, Revolving-Disc-System”.
  • To quickly see the time simply look under the inverted triangle below the 60 minute marker.
  • The watch has a new 22mm I.W. Suisse deployment clasp strap that matches the orange dial perfectly and it will fit the largest wrist or can be adjusted to fit a smaller wrist as well.
  • We did not want to break the waterproof seal, but the automatic movement used in this model is a highly regarded ETA calibre 2824 with hack set and has 21 jewels (we believe).
  • The case back reads "Momentum 15, Angular Momentum, Revolving Disc System, Automatic Movement, Swiss Made, Illum, Water resistant 100M, Rds, Tech, Sapphire”.
  • The case measures 36.5mm across without the crown (39mm with the crown) and 44mm from top to bottom (including lugs).
This watch has been gently worn and is offered here in near mint condition.
One of the most unique and popular timepieces to come out of Switzerland in some time.....don't miss out.
