Description

This is a choice little "One Third Farthing" from Great Britain. It was struck in 1885 for use on the British Island of Malta in the Mediterranean.

There were two distinct types of these little coins struck for Victoria. The first type, struck only in 1844 and in copper, had "Britannia" on the reverse and was designed by William Wyon. This bronze type was designed by Leonard Charles Wyon and 1885 was the last year these were produced.

Weight: .92 Gram, 15 Millimeter, Bronze. Mintage: 288,000.
As a comparison, the famous 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent had a mintage of 484,000 pieces.
"Standard Catalog of World Coins" (1801-1900) by Krause-Mishler. #750.
"Standard Catalog of English and UK Coins" by Coincraft. #VYTF-075.

Obverse: VICTORIA D. G. • BRITT. REG. F. D. • Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of the British territories and defender of the faith. • Laureate Victoria left.

The marks in the fields are clash marks from the wreath on the reverse die. The clash happened when the dies were not parallel and it may have broken the reverse die because they changed it. The reverse die of this coin has no evidence of the clash.

Reverse: ONE THIRD • FARTHING • 1885 • Crown and wreath.

The Coin: A choice little piece, with an interesting error that does not hurt the eye appeal excessively. It never saw use, and it has never been cleaned. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
