Here on offer is a superb antique Saint John the Evangelist bronze plaque.

It is believed that John the Evangelist was John the Apostle, his feast day is on 27 December, the third day of Christmastide. As a historical figure, he is one of the pillars of the Jerusalem church after the death of Jesus and was one of the original twelve apostles, the only one to have lived and not be martyred.

John is traditionally depicted as an aged man with a beard in Byzantine art, or alternatively as a beardless youth in the art of Medieval Europe. In Medieval works, Saint John is often presented in an androgynous/feminised manner, as with this piece. It is thought, John's feminine features have helped to make him more relatable to women  and 'a crucial figure for male believers who sought to cultivate an attitude of affective piety, a highly emotional style of devotion. John is often shown with snake emerging from the chalice, he was challenged to drink a cup of poison to demonstrate his faith. Some believe that this symbol was adopted in the 13th century. Another common attribute is a book or a scroll, symbolising his scholarship.

The plaque is beautifully cast in bronze in relief and follows the Medieval style of portrayal for Saint John. Sadly I can find no maker marks. It is possible that this was once part of a larger item or was always intended as a stand-alone piece. It has a small fixed bronze loop at the top from which to hang the plaque.

The plaque offered in good antique condition, it measures about 12.8cm in diameter and weighs 271g.

A highly collectable piece.
