What do Ignition Coils do?

Ignition Coils aim to deliver high voltage that jumps from the centre to the ground electrode of the spark plug within a cylinder, hence producing the ignition spark.

Ignition Coils play a significant role in sourcing reliable ignition which provide smooth and effective operation of the engine.

How to Diagnose and Change?

Usually, the service life of ignition coil is between 60,000 and 80,000 kms. Yet, there are some other impacts that could cause to a reduced service life. Hence, below conditions should be checked before considering the change of ignition coils.

1.     If a vehicle no longer starts up, the engine audibly misfires or the vehicle’s acceleration is significantly impaired, this may indicate a defective ignition coil. The same applies if the check engine lamp illuminates, the engine control unit switches to emergency mode or an error code is displayed. A visual inspection and further diagnosis will be required.

Visual Inspection of Ignition Coils

First check:

  • Is it mechanical damage or hairline cracks are present?
  • Are electrical wiring and the plug intact, corrosion and kinks free.?
  • Is battery’s supply voltage sufficient?
  • Are all valve seals intact?

Testing Ignition Coils

  • Measure both the primary and secondary electrical resistances with a multimeter.
  • Measure the magnetic field is a fast and easy way in finding out the ignition coils’ functionality.
  • How? Place the detector on the electrical component, an acoustic signal and illuminated LEDs will indicate its functionality.

Proper Installation Procedure of Ignition Coils

Correct installation is vital to ensure optimum production and delivery of high voltage of an ignition coil throughout its entire service life.

  • Avoid excessive force. If an ignition coil does not fit, the vehicle application should be checked. This applies to spark plug terminals and ignition lead terminals too. The reason is that they must fit the respective connections of the ignition coil. If an incorrect connection occurs, the contacts can oxidise and become damaged.
  • Use only correct tools during the installation and removal of an ignition coil. For example, if a pencil coil is fitted straight into the spark plug bores, it can be difficult to remove and could cause to damage if a special extractor is not used.
  • Tighten any ignition coil attachment screws to the correct torque.
