What is NVMe and do i need it?:


NVMe SSDs are equipped to handle the new advanced storage communications protocol (in High Sierra and Mojave) freeing the CPU and chipset the burden of controlling and regulating the data I/O of traditional SSDs. By its design, NVM Express allows host hardware and software to fully exploit the levels of parallelism possible in modern SSDs. As a result, NVM Express reduces I/O overhead and brings various performance improvements relative to previous logical-device interfaces, including multiple, long command queues, and reduced latency.  Additionally, the drive supports the new Apple File System (APFS) including strong encryption, fast copy-on-write metadata, space sharing, file and directory cloning, snapshots, fast directory sizing, atomic safe-save primitives, and improved file system fundamentals.
