What are Swiss Soldier Stamps?

During the First and Second World Wars, special stamps were created and issued free of charge to members of the Swiss military forces for them to frank their field post correspondence. They were not valid for any other postal purposes. Many of them were also sold cancelled-to-order to raise funds for the support of soldiers' families due to the long periods of time they were away from home guarding the borders.

The stamps almost always identify the particular military unit they were produced for, and there is a tremendous variety of often interesting and attractive designs, as well as some overprints and other variants.

Swiss Soldier Stamps form a popular subcategory of Cinderella collecting.
