This
is an original (NOT a modern reprint) vintage 1936 Art Deco high quality
offset color print by the renown English photographer John Everard. This
is not a photogravure or chemical process print - it is a vintage
photo-mechanical offset print (also known as a photo engraving) made
from the original negative/image in 1936.
This photo engraving is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE
OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered
serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Computer scans simply cannot do justice nor render the soft color palette and rich tonality of the actual print itself. The watermark word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print.
The
beautiful color work of John Everard is seldom seen in any form -
primarily because it was only produced in very limited editions for a
short time in the mid 1930's. This is not a photogravure or silver
gelatin print - it is a high quality offset print created with a
special 5 color process under the supervision of John Everard. Normal
color reproduction in the 1930's used (and generally still does today)
a four color process, which at the time was quite costly. Obsessed with
color accuracy and quality of print, Everard went to great lengths to
ensure complete perfection in the output of his color work and thus
employed a special 5 color process for his limited edition color work
in the 1930's. The blocks for this print were etched by the famous
English plate makers John Swain & Son, Ltd. - under the supervision
of John Everard.
John
Everard used Dufay reversal film (transparency) almost exclusively for
his color work - it had a uniquely beautiful palette unmatched by
anything else of the day. These color images were made with a large
format 8x10 view camera and according to Everard's notes at the time,
exposure time for his outdoor color nudes could be a full 3 seconds and
exposure time for his indoor nudes could range all the way to 10
seconds - during which the model had to hold perfectly still!
In
the 1930's, color photography was in its infancy and therefor color
work by history's greatest photographers of that period is seldom seen.
To produce color work during that time required enormous efforts but,
the results could be absolutely stunning - even by today's standards.
Unique color palettes of 1930's reversal/negative films (such as Dufay
& Finlay) and exacting work by highly skilled etchers &
separators, resulted in images that were and are unique in the history
of photography. Many feel that this unique "vintage" look aesthetically
surpasses today's often highly manipulated color imagery.
READY FOR FRAMING & DISPLAY! - This beautiful vintage color offset process and the resulting fine
prints make vintage color offset prints highly collectible and excellent
vintage prints for framing.
