Offered here is a scarce original WWII era enamel pin for the American Theatre Wing. This is the rare large size 2.5" wing (not a smaller lapel pin). The image is of a red, white, and blue enameled wing with a theatre mask in the center. Reverse has a locking clasp back and is not hallmarked (probably either silver or silverplate). Excellent condition with enamel in great shape. Very rare and collectible home front item. See illustrations.
The American Theatre Wing was established in 1939 as the successor to a similar WWI organization. With the entry of the United States into the war, the Wing established "The Stage Door Canteen" to entertain American servicemen. After the war, the organization concentrated on holding seminars about American theater, and on funding scholarship grants. It is best known in contemporary times for having created, in the same year, "The American Theatre Wing's Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre," or "Tony Awards", which it still sponsors.
