Marriages of

Culpeper County Virginia

1781-1815

By Catherine Lindsay Knorr

 Paperback, 112 pages, Very Good

Published 1954, Reprinted 1982

Culpeper County was established in 1749, with territory partitioned from Orange County. The county is named for Thomas Culpeper, 2nd Baron Culpeper, colonial governor of Virginia 1677- 1683.

St. Mark’s Parish was founded 1731 in Orange County, and was later included in Culpeper County. The Episcopal church was required to maintain records of marriage bonds prior to the Revolutionary War, but afterwards the only legal requirement was for marriages to be reported to the clerks of the County Court. Only these minister’s returns exist today. After parish registers were seized by the state in 1802, many were later lost by the county courts. This book covers 38 ministers (Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran and Episcopal) making returns to the Culpeper Court during this period.
