Each of the 77 gold cards in the Preferred Steel set can also be found in gold, silver and bronze promo versions. The samples differ from the issued versions only in an overprint diagonally on the back which reads "PROMOTIONAL CARD." This parallel promo edition represents  one of the largest promo card issues of the mid-1990s. Cards were reportedly distributed to dealers on the basis of one gold promo per three-case order. The silver and bronze versions were reportedly never officially released, though examples have found their way into the market in some quantity.
