Definition Nephrite Jade : About Nephrite Jade

Jade is one of the oldest and most important gemstones, with a history dating over 7,000 years. It is especially prized throughout Chinese and Latin American cultures, often holding more value than gold. The term 'Jade' was derived from 'Piedra de Ijada', a Spanish phrase meaning 'stone for the pain in the side' because Spanish explorers saw natives of Central America holding pieces of Jade to their sides, believing that it could cure ills. The name 'Nephrite' was derived from the Greek word for 'kidney', which refers to its supposed ability to cure kidney disease. Nephrite is one of two distinct mineral forms classified as Jade (the other is Jadeite) and up until 1863, Nephrite was believed to be one and the same as Jadeite.

Nephrite is a fibrous aggregate variety of tremolite-actinolite, a basic calcium magnesium iron silicate, whereas Jadeite is a pyroxene mineral. Nephrite is more common than Jadeite and although it is slightly softer than Jadeite, it is considered tougher due to its denser structure. Traditional Chinese Jade typically refers to Nephrite since there are no actual Jadeite deposits located in China. Today, green Nephrite is considered to be the most valuable Nephrite, but translucent, white Nephrite was considered the most valuable up until the introduction of fine Burmese 'Imperial' Jadeite Jade during the 18th century.

Black Nephrite Jade

is Nephrite colored by microscopic inclusions of dark minerals; known as Black Nephrite Jade.

Nephrite Jade is a common form of Jade found all over the world. Nephrite Jade belongs to the amphibole group of minerals and has a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale.

Though Nephrite is softer than Jadeite it is actually much tougher. Nephrites fracture strength is about 200 MN/m2 whereas Jadeites is about 100 MN/m2. This can be an explanation of why Nephrite Jade is commonly known as the “toughest natural stone on earth”.

This form of the Jade stone has been used for thousands of years because of its valued toughness and density which is the reason it has been used for everything from weapons to tools.

When the term toughness is used it is in regards to how brittle a material is. This is a large difference from the term ‘hardness’ used for stones which relates to how easily a mineral or material scratches.

Nephrite Jade is a tough stone because of its finely interlocked fibers. These are actually microscopic needle-like crystals which bind the stone together. These fine needles are randomly grouped together where the best quality Nephrite has a large amount of. When these small crystals are coarser the Jade is less tough.

  Moose Antler : MOOSE ANTLER

LATIN NAME: Alces alces
ORIGIN: North America
HARVESTING PRACTICE: The moose antler we use is collected in the wild after the male drops its antlers after the mating season. No animal is harmed in any way during this harvesting process.

OUR SOURCE: We import our Moose antler directly from Canada

The moose (North America) or Eurasian elk (Europe) (Alces alces) is the largest extant species in the deer family. Moose are distinguished by the palmate antlers of the males; other members of the family have antlers with a dendritic ("twig-like") configuration. Moose typically inhabit boreal and mixed deciduous forests of the Northern Hemisphere in temperate to subarctic climates.

In North America, the moose range includes almost all of Canada (excluding the arctic), most of Alaska, northern New England and upstate New York and the upper Rocky Mountains.

The male's antlers grow as cylindrical beams projecting on each side of the head at right angles to the midline of the skull, and then fork. The lower prong of this fork may be either simple, or divided into two or three tines, with some flattening.

The male will drop its antlers after the mating season and conserve energy for the winter. A new set of antlers will then re-grow in the spring. Antlers take three to five months to fully develop, making them one of the fastest growing animal organs. They initially have a layer of skin, called "velvet," which is shed once the antlers become fully grown. Immature bulls may not shed their antlers for the winter, but retain them until the following spring.

ABOUT MOOSE ANTLER AND ITS CARE: Take care not to drop it or sit or step on it! Moose antler does not need to be conditioned, but may be oiled to protect it with jojoba oil, coconut oil or some other organic care product. This will cause the color to deepen into an ivory like tone, not "cream white". If used in jewelry, this may also happen over time due to the natural oils of your skin absorbing into the material as it becomes a part of your daily life. Organic Moose antler should never be left in water or direct sunlight (like the bathroom sink or the dashboard of your car). Do not soak or autoclave any of our organic materials.

Organic, biodegradable materials should be treated with care and respect.
