”Church of Rancho de Taos, New Mexico”
Wood Cut Print

Titled Verso
Dated: 1926

Up for sale is an exquisitely rare woodcut print by the El Paso, Texas native Tom Lea depicting the famous Ranchos de Taos, San Francisco de Asis Mission Church. Many of the talented New Mexico artists experimented with the method of woodblock printmaking in the early 20th century but they are extremely rare to find especially in such wonderful condition. Titled and signed verso on the attached label indicates this print was made in 1926 when the artist was only 19 years old, a year before marrying his first wife Nancy June Taylor, making this one the earliest examples of his works! Assuming the date of 1926 is correct this print was made while he was attending the Art Institute of Chicago which he attended from 1924-1926 before apprenticing under John Norton a Chicago muralist. The artist's depiction and choice of composition are phenomenal making this not only a rare print in itself but a fine early example of the talented Texas native. Resting in a nice thing period wood frame measuring 16 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches the print measures roughly 8 x 6.75 inches and has not been examined outside of its frame. The condition appears excellent with just some expected toning to the sheet and minor blemishes to the frame. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this rare Tom Lea woodcut but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
