c.1000-300BC THAILAND BAN CHIANG SPIRAL EARTHENWARE POTTERY STORAGE JAR POT VASE

Description:

An excellent opportunity to acquire this impressive hand crafted ovoid shaped earthenware pot with striking red spiralled decoration on a buff ground, excavated from the Ban Chiang kilns in North Thailand.

The pot, of bellied ovoid form with flaring rim, decorated red spiral patterns covering the surface, is typical of the elaborately decorated pots produced during the 1st Millennium B.C in this region.

Background:

Ban Chiang, Thailand, is an archaeological site documenting initial settlement by Neolithic rice farmers about 1500 BC through transition to the Bronze Age about 1000 BC. Discovered in 1966, the site attracted enormous publicity due to its attractive red painted pottery. The finds at Ban Chiang clearly demonstrated that the prehistory of Thailand and South-east Asia was far more complex than had previously been thought.

Provenance:

Purchased from a reputable London auction house in 2017, with an incorrect African attribution.

Dimensions:

Height: 21 cm or 8 1/4 inches

Width: 18.5 cm or 7 1/4 inches

Condition:

In good restored condition, with repairs visible to the upper rim and to a crack around the waist. The piece is intact and feels robust, providing an excellent example of this type of antiquity. Calcified surface visible throughout, as expected. A superb museum quality piece, which would complement any serious collection. Please see the images provided which complement this description.
