Become commander of the legendary Nautilus aged just fifteen on the occasion of her father’s death, in 1925 the science-brigand Janni Nemo set out for the frozen reaches of Antarctica in order to fulfil his legacy, learning amidst the subsequent loss and madness an important lesson of the heart.
Now it is 1941, and with Janni’s daughter strategically married into the family of aerial warlord Jean Ro-bur, the combined Houses of Nemo and Robur are en-gaged in running skirmishes against the military might of German-Tomanian dictator Adenoid Hynkel, a clownish lunatic who has dragged the world into a horrifying vortex of war and destruction. However, when the pirate queen learns that loved ones are held hostage in the nightmarish Berlin metropolis she has no choice save to intervene directly, travelling with her ageing lover Broad Arrow Jack into the belly of the beast.
But down amongst the ramps and walkways of that alienated city there are monsters, criminals and legends every bit as ill-famed and formidable as she herself, including the remaining vestiges of Germany’s notorious
‘Twilight Heroes’, a dark Teutonic counterpart to Mina Murray’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. And waiting at the far end of this gauntlet of alarming adversaries there is something much, much worse.
