1950s San Francisco Examiner News Stand

For your consideration is an original 1950s "Oldest News Stand Standing" San Francisco Examiner (Hearst Corporation) newspaper vending machine. The San Francisco Examiner was the longtime "Monarch of the Dailies" and was the flagship subsidiary company of the Hearst dynasty chain.

There are not any visible brand-markings or dates on the news stand.

The price (10 cents) of the machine indicates a time frame of the 1950s.

The news stand is in good condition with a natural beautiful patina.

The bottom frame of the metal news stand may seem unusual- it was designed for height and weight support rather than for balance purposes. This type of news stand would have been set against a street light post, then chained off and locked to prevent any theft of the vending machine or the coins in the lock box. As the news stand would lean or tilt against the light  post, it enables for the coins to accumulate toward the back of the lock box thus allowing ample room for coins to be inserted. The news stand most likely was setup nearby a San Francisco bustling-street-corner and raked in some definite serious coin!

The front original wire-cord handle is intact. The wire cord is designed to hold the papers inside by tying the cord around the backside of the machine. When the news stand is empty, the cord is tied-off in the front of the machine (as shown) The wire cord is dry, and very fragile has not been unraveled.

The news stand is missing the back coin-slot bank and lock. The coin slot does not have a coin return. Consumers were entrusted to deposit the 10 cents for a newspaper.

There are two (2) red-faded round stickers located on the top, and front of the news stand. One sticker clearly reads, "10c" while the other sticker is illegible, it probably also reads the same. Or, the other red sticker could be the Sunday paper price.

The top front signage of the news stand reads, "SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER" "ON SALE HERE" "IN BOX 10c" "NORTHERN CALIFORNIA'S LEADING NEWSPAPER" Some of the text on the top-sign are illegible.

The lower signage reads, "SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER" "Leads in NEW ADVERTISING CIRCULATION"

     The news stand dimensions are: 39" tall x 19.25" wide x 5.75" deep weight=16lb 4.2oz

The news stand has not been cleaned, restored, or refurbished in any manner whatsoever.

     Not a reserve, happy bidding!
