New Unsmoked Ser Jacopo (R2) Spongia Bent Dublin Diamond Shank with Saddle Stem

This Ser Jacopo pipe is new and unsmoked.

This is an R2 Rustic Spongia (natural / unstained) pipe in a bent Dublin shape. It has a diamond shank which makes the pipe very striking. The pipe is rustic carved with the exception of the top of the bowl and the nomenclature panels, which cover the underside of the shank. The pipe is light weight  and obviously light in color. The pipe will darken over time as it's smoked, which is one of the appealing characteristics of the Spongia pipes, rather like a meerschaum. Additionally, the tobacco chamber has been left natural, which is a nice touch, especially on an unfinished pipe like the Spongia. Because of the interesting carving in the transition from the bowl to the shank this pipe will sit in place…a plus.

The Spongia designation used by Ser Jacopo to designate that the briar is not stained but rather left in its natural color. They can come in the R2 (rustic) or S3 (sandblast) finishes. The S3 designation has always indicated an unfinished briar, so there are older Ser Jacopo S3 and R2 pipes which do not say Spongia. The older R2 pipes were stained with a light, often referred to as "natural" stain, but the older S3 pipes were not stained and left in their natural state.

I was the importer and distributor of Ser Jacopo Pipes in the USA from their founding in 1982 and for the succeeding 35+ years. Almost all of the Ser Jacopo pipes I am listing, or have listed, were made during Giancarlo Guidi's lifetime.
